A steam boiler paired with a calorifier generates steam for multiple uses, laundry, kitchen equipment, and sterilization where applicable, then uses a calorifier, a shell-and-tube or plate heat exchanger, to transfer that steam heat into a separate domestic hot water loop.

For hotels that only need hot water for guest rooms and a small F&B outlet, a direct hot water boiler is usually the simpler and more cost-effective choice. For properties that already run a commercial laundry, a full kitchen, or plan to add either, a steam boiler plus calorifier lets one steam source cover hot water, laundry, and kitchen loads instead of running separate direct boilers for each. The tradeoff is more equipment: the steam boiler itself, the calorifier, condensate return, and steam-line accessories such as pressure reducing stations and traps.
